Big Turnout at Prado!

Brent Higham and Steven Gerald, the main drivers behind the new-ish Riverside Chain Bangers Disc Golf Club put on a very fun 3rd Annual Prado Ice Bowl on Saturday in Chino.

Mother Nature cooperated, keeping the rain away, temperatures in the comfortable range and letting the sun poke through the clouds every now and then.  The keg of Coors Light helped the mood as well, and may have helped loosen up some purse strings as the mulligans were a-flyin’!  In the end Jacob Newey must have wanted that cool rustic basket trophy the most, or maybe he just really didn’t want to miss that putt on hole #2.  No matter the reason, he played solid disc golf, carding a neat 20-under par on a mulligan-inspired morning at Prado.

od enough to edge out Golden Sombrero veteran A.J. Risley (42), Nick Wright (44) and Chris “Fossil” Clements (46) in the Open/Advanced division.  Suzette Simons fired a 3-under 57 to win the Women’s Open division and hold on to 3rd place after three events in the Golden Sombrero Series.  La Mirada’s Kevin Ascheri took a 1-stroke win in the Intermediate/ Recreational division with an 1-under 49, just ahead of Kevin Shaw (50), Dan Ross (51), Rick Poynter (52) and Jeff Barber (53).  Heather Davion’s 65 was the top score in the Women’s Intermediate division and  Shalon Holiman took the Juniors division with an 87.

Once all of the cards were turned in everyone’s attention turned to the ring of fire contest, which featured several sets of ties that caused the competition to carry on and on and on….and on.  As best as can be remembered, Eric Stanley and Aubrey Daniels were among the winners.  If future TDs want all of the ring of fire winners to be remembered, they will need to not have a free keg of beer on hand.  One of the big winners in the prize raffle was Richard Garcia, who will be receiving a new Innova Discatcher Traveler basket courtesy of our friends at Disc Golf United.

Suzette Captures the Redlands Ice Bowl!

Bill Maury-Holmes congratulates winner Suzette Simons

Another beautiful day in sunny SoCal, the same kind that convinces folks from the Midwest that what they see on the Rose Bowl broadcast must be the dream. Go west young people! Clear blue skies and ample winter sun prevailed even if we thin-blooded locals thought it on the brisk side. But, hey, no wimps, no whiners…

To ring in the SoCal disc golf New Year 43 good souls partook of the 9th Annual Redlands Ice Bowl at Ford Park, flinging plastic and raising money for Redlands Family Service Association. As always it was a birdie hunt with lots of good-natured ribbing spurring players to re-putt “for the children.” Never has tin-cupping been for such a good cause.

She called it boldly in the week prior and Suzette Simons followed through with the necessary skill to win.   This again kept the coveted Redlands Ice Bowl trophy in the Inland Empire and also led to Suzette claiming her bag of oranges. Maintaining the established standard, Suzette was able to run seventeen birdies and get the ace to boot. -18s abounded as seven folks accomplished that but couldn’t match Suzette.

In the “Metal o Nada” round Greg “Cheeky” Arimura hit metal twice and took the game-within-a game.

Most significantly, we will be gratefully presenting Redlands Family Service Association with $705 for their important work. Thanks go to the City of Redlands, the Redlands Morning Kiwanis Club, Disc Golf Values, Disc Golf United and Innova Champion Disc Golf for their constant and generous support. See you Saturday the 7th of January in 2017!

Bill, Samuel and Joel Maury-Holmes, Co-Tournament Directors
