Mast Park Has A Chilly First Ice Bowl

OK, so it in no way compares to the snowy, freezing Ice Bowls back east, but in terms of San Diego the weather at Sunday’s Mast Park Ice Bowl was

chilly.  With temperatures staying in the 50’s and a breeze blowing all day, 57 players participated in the first organized tournament held at Mast Park.

Jason Fitzgerald had a wire-to-wire victory in the Open/Advanced division with a first round of 38 and a final 9 of just 19 throws for a 57 total.  Jason finished 5 throws ahead of Jerry Jones (62) and one more ahead of Jonathan Maki (63).  In the Ladies’ Open/Advanced division Allie Robles and Rianne Hamilton were tied after 27 holes at 76 strokes apiece.  The title was decided with a 90-foot CTP throw.  Rianne tossed it to within 5 feet of the basket, but then Allie threw within 3 feet for the win!

John Maki won the Men’s Intermediate/Recreational title with a total score of 63, just ahead of Jack Moffett (65) and Alfredo

Salazar (66).  The Maki family was also represented by John’s grandson Kevin Rojas, who won the Junior title.  Claire Kinder bested a field of four Ladies in the Intermediate/Recreational division, with her 86 beating second-place Shannon Mendia by 6 throws.

The big winners on Sunday, however, was the Santee Food Bank, which will be receiving a donation of $1,200 thanks to the Mast Park disc golfers.  Players purchased a large number of mulligan/raffle tickets to help support the cause.  Two big supporters were Jennifer and Don Burdette, who were rewarded for their generosity by winning both a mini Innova basket and a portable Innova Traveler.  They must have found a four-leafed clover on Sunday, because the luck rubbed off on Michelle Chambless.  Michelle left before the raffle and had Jennifer hold her tickets and when Michelle’s ticket was pulled Jennifer was there to claim her prize!

The Golden Sombrero Series winds up next weekend with the Mystery Ice Bowl on Saturday and the Balboa Ice Bowl on Sunday.
