Brengle Terrace Ice Bowl players – under threatening skies

Expecting weather, and with Brengle being a tough course, we figured it was going to be a long day. However, that wasn’t the case. We had cards finishing up at about 2 and half hours a round. Starting our round at 9:25 am, we had a play-off, awards, a few rounds of ring of fire and the raffle all wrapped up by 2:00 pm.

Congratulations to James Geddes for hitting an ace on hole 15 (normal 13)! I believe this was his first ace and he did it during a tournament! Congratulations as well to Scott Miller for hitting an ace on hole 1! As we all know, both of these holes are no easy ace so great job to those guys!

At the 1st Annual Brengle Terrace Park Ice Bowl we offered three divisions for players to choose from: Advanced, Intermediate, and Recreational. The Rec division was the biggest field with 31 players, followed by Intermediate with 20 and Advanced with 12.

Raffle and mulligan purchases went a long way to boost our

donation to the San Diego Food Bank. Unusually, the raffle prizes were pretty evenly spread throughout the field. Some of the most notable moments are when myself (Jordan Hicks) and Scott Miller wasted 6 and 13 mulligans (respectively) on hole 12 (normal 10) only to take a par. Mulligans made the round more interesting for more people than just Jordan and Scott; Kurt Hollar used 6 on Hole 11 (normal 9), Keith Hutson used 8 on Hole 13 (normal 11), Joseph Jones used 6 on Hole 15 (normal 13), Nolan Williams used 5 on Hole 3, and Mark Stutzman used 8 on Hole 10 (normal 8) – all five walked away with a par. Another highlight of the day that you can’t forget is how A.J. Risley shot a perfect round with -18!

And the verdict, after 18 holes…

No Wimps, No Whiners at La Mirada!

So, the motto for the nationwide Ice Bowl Series of disc golf events is “No Wimps – No Whiners”.  That motto grew out of the roots of the events in Missouri, where January and February weather usually has some snow on the ground (and cold temperatures).  The idea being that the players are out on the course having fun, but there are people going hungry in their communities, so players don’t really have much to complain about.  At La Mirada, players were joining together to raise funds for Pathways of Hope, the local food bank charity.

In SoCal we usually don’t have cold and snowy weather for our Ice Bowls (except for Wrightwood!), but this time we made up for it with WIND and RAIN!

The crew that showed up and then finished the La Mirada Ice Bowl were in no way wimps or whiners.  With temperatures in the low to mid 50’s, steady rain for the first 18 holes and winds in the 20-30 mph range for most of the event, they showed that they were a hardy bunch.  Part of what made the day manageable for some players may have been the cups and cups of chili that they had to eat!  Ten players also participated as chefs in the Golden Sombrero Series’ first chili cook-off, and there were some great entries.  Tournament players were each given five votes in the contest, which they could give all to one chili or spread across multiple entries.  Players stopped for a break in the Pro Shop to slurp chili and debate their ingredients and styles in between rounds.  In the end, Justin Rosales was judged to be the best chili chef and for his skill (and labor) he won the 1st prize:  a Discatcher Traveler portable basket.

And there was also some disc golf!  50 players showed up to tee off at 9am in a steady rain.  After several hours of rain, wind and mulligans, Christopher Pinegar came out on top in the Open/Advanced division with a score of 93.5 for 36 holes.  .5 you ask?  Yes.  An extra twist added to the tournament rules was that shots that landed under the basket (inside or touching the DG circle found on most holes) only counted as half a stoke for the drop-in putt.  As you can see from the scores (reported below) lots of players had .5’s on their scorecard.  Christopher ended with a 5-shot margin over second place Aubrey Daniels (98.5), who is also in second place in the Golden Sombrero Series standings.  Tyler Randal was third (99.5) while Gilbert Corona and Josh Kirkendall (104.5) tied for fourth.

In the Men’s Intermediate/Recreational division Kevin Ascheri took the win with a score of 108, just

ahead of Derek Kurtti (109.5) in second.  Bryan Jensen and Erich Painter tied for third.  In the Ladies’ division, Daisy Barrientos didn’t finish all 36 holes but she started, which was enough to take the Ladies’ title.

There was an ace prize offered – a Discatcher Traveler for a player getting an ace.  Understandably on such a windy, rainy day…there were no aces.  But there were some 1.5’s (tee shots parked under the basket).  Eddie Andrique, Kevin Ascheri, Gilbert Corona and Chad Weuve all carded 1.5’s during play and settled the tie with a windy CTP shot over the bleachers by the Pro Shop to the practice basket.  Chad Weuve was up second and put his shot within 15 feet to take home the basket.

Based on reactions from the players afterward, the combo Ice Bowl/Chili Contest was a winner (the chili really came in handy on a cold, wet, windy day) and you can expect it to happen again next year.  The ample raffle may have also helped lift spirits, with prizes donated from Upper Park Designs, West Coast Disc Golf, Discovering the World, and Innova Disc Golf.
